Mary Stacy Nunan

Nunan, Mary Stacy December 22, 1926 - March 13, 2018 Mary passed away in her sleep at home among family and friends on March 13, 2018. Her last hours were peaceful and comfortable with her beloved 40's music in the background. Mary was the daughter of Edwin P. and Miriam Thompson Stacy of Minneapolis, MN and, along with sister Gail and brother Clinton, had a happy active childhood that took advantage of everything Minnesota had to offer. Honing her ice skating skills on the frozen Minneapolis lakes, Mary was invited to perform with the Ice Follies when they visited town. It was quite a thrill for a 10-year old girl. She was also an accomplished skier which would later play a significant role in her life. After graduating from Northrop Collegiate School for Girls, Mary attended Bradford Junior College in Massachusetts. She then went on to the University of Minnesota where she received a degree in economics. She landed a job right away with Archer Daniels Midland in Minneapolis and began her "career" but a fateful post-collegiate ski trip to Sun Valley, Idaho with friends changed everything. John Nunan, also from Minneapolis, happened to be there competing in a downhill race event. Although they were acquainted in their hometown, a romance blossomed on the Idaho slopes and eventually led to marriage in 1949. John and Mary lived in Minneapolis for two years. Son John was born in 1950 before the family moved to Davenport, Iowa in 1952 where children Stacy and Todd followed. Mary spoke of her time in Davenport as one of the happiest in her life. The relationships she and John made there were lifelong and some of these friends even followed them in their next move to California in 1957. Settling in Lafayette, Mary quickly adapted to the California lifestyle. Adding a fourth child, daughter Gail, to the mix helped make life a non-stop schedule of activities. Mary was active in supporting and participating in everything her children did. She still found time to be a tireless volunteer for the Junior League and Foster Families. In addition to their skiing, both Mary and John became very devoted tennis players. They had a broad circle of close Bay Area friends, many of whom they met on the courts. When they moved the "operation" to Sacramento in 1969, they expanded their friendships and began to travel the world, particularly visiting ski destinations. It was in Sacramento that Mary and John finally put down lasting roots. Mary was truly unique and unforgettable. A loving wife, mother and friend, she was also a fierce competitor. She coined the memorable phrase, "stupid tennis", to describe that sport in any non-competitive form. She was always a great doubles partner for those who wanted to win. She was a daily courtside fixture at Arden Hills and Rio Del Oro with her like-minded group of players up until the age of 80. When her tennis days were done, she switched to ping-pong where she often visited friend Lucille at Eskaton for a spirited match. Mary was an avid reader, completing at least one book a week even when all the kidswere around. She also did daily crossword puzzles to keep sharp. She fostered an active and healthy lifestyle for the family to follow. Somehow, with all of this, Mary maintained countless close friendships. Her family, to this day, is in awe of how she managed all of the family activities and still had time to be a special friend to so many. The last 10 years of Mary's life were not without difficulty but were, to her family, the most rewarding and inspirational. Living in her own home under the loving eyes of caregivers, Kendry, Lia, Kate, Natalie, Olga, Alicia, Karina, Conchita and Victoria, Mary shared her love, warmth, insight and sense of humor. These years will always be remembered as a gift & not a burden. Mary will be deeply missed by son John (Susan) of Sacramento, daughter Stacy Williams (Greg) of West Sacramento, son Todd (Marcy Cederblom) of Pocatello, Idaho, and daughter Gail Kennedy (Patrick) of Santa Barbara, CA, grandchildren John (Elizabeth) and Bjorn Nunan, Ezra (Jenica) and Anna Williams, Griffin (fiancée Olivia Hayward) and Glyn Kennedy and great grandchildren Alice and John Nunan, Noah and Nathan Williams. The family would like you to join them in celebrating Mary's life on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 12:00 PM at Arden Hills Club and Spa, 1220 Arden Hills Lane, Sacramento, CA 95864.
