Jon Borden Bergerud

Bergerud, Jon Borden Age 78, died at home in Plymouth MN on March 5, 2018. Jon was born on March 23, 1939 in Jamestown North Dakota, the son of Helen B. and Morris Erickson. After his father's death and his mother's remarriage, Jon became the adopted son of Red Owl President and State Senator, Alf L. Bergerud and soon moved to the family home in Edina, MN. Jon graduated from Blake School in 1957 where he received the Stricker Trophy for Debate and went on to Yale University graduating in 1961. His work career spanned 3M, Sears, Mankato State University and Merrill Publishing and he later served as a member of the Blake Alumni Board as well as the Richard Wagner Society. Jon lived the intellectual's life pursuing a deep passion for classical music, literature and history. He took an interest in a panoply of subjects from movies and history to the great novels and boxing. But his passion was always music. He began collecting and playing recordings of the great symphonies of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries as early as fourth grade and soon went on to opera. The beloved family cabin on the Namekagen River was his sanctuary where he hosted canoe trips and lively debates on current affairs for his many friends. With his vast knowledge and prodigious memory, Jon liked to entertain and amaze companions with little known facts from history, such as scandals of our American forefathers or the peculiar habits of the Kings and Queens of England. A caring and devoted brother and friend, Jon was known for his quick wit, keen intelligence and kindness toward others. Jon was preceded in death by his parents, Helen Borden Bergerud and Alf Leon Bergerud and is survived by his brothers: Alf L. Bergerud Jr (Lee) and Arthur T Bergerud; sister, Mary Bergerud Perkins (Michael) & his nieces and nephew: Samantha, Nicholas and Natalie Perkins. Funeral service, Friday March 23rd 1PM at Plymouth Congregational Church, 1900 Nicollet Ave., Minneapolis, with a visitation one-hour prior.
