Richard Moore didn't put all his eggs in one lottery basket, and it was a good thing.

Moore, 64, said he was driving home to Northfield on Wednesday from his cabin when he stopped in Pine City to gas up. While paying, he also bought tickets for the Powerball, Mega Millions, Gopher 5 and Daily 3, then tucked them away in the sun visor.

Turned out the Gopher 5 ticket was worth $2,008,806 in Wednesday's jackpot drawing. That's just short of the record of $2,032,201 won on Nov. 8, 2005.

Moore's wife, Joyce, said Richard called her Friday at the bank where she works and said she needed to come home "because we may have won some money."

"I took the garbage out and went back in the house," Richard Moore recalled. "I thought, 'I should check those tickets,' so I put my slippers on and got them out of the truck." He checked the numbers, alerted Joyce and they headed straight to lottery headquarters in Roseville to claim their prize.

The winning ticket was bought at Heidelberger's Rock Creek Motor Stop, at 5737 Hwy. 70. The numbers drawn were 12-13-23-33-34.
