Speed limits on several Wisconsin highways will rise to 70 miles per hour as soon as crews can put up new signs.
The new speed limits will go into effect on 161 miles of multi-lane, non-interstate freeway segments that the Wisconsin Department of Transportation has determined can handle higher speed limits.
Earlier this year, the Wisconsin State Legislature passed Act 19, which increased the speed limit from 65 mph to 70 mph on nine four-lane highways in the state. The law also gives the DOT authority to raise the speed limit on multi-lane freeways on which motor vehicle access is limited to ramps and interchanges that are not at-grade.
Much of the work is expected to be completed this week, except areas where construction activity is wrapping up, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation said.
