Pedestrians and bicyclists in St. Paul's Summit-University neighborhood will soon be able to direct route to cross Interstate 94.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation on Tuesday said new pedestrian bridges at MacKubin and Grotto streets will open on Dec. 2. A grand opening will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Hallie Q. Brown Community Center at 270 N. Kent Street.
The celebration will highlight the roles the bridges play in the Rondo neighborhood, which served as the center of St. Paul's African-American community until the construction of I-94 in the 1960s.
MnDOT tore down old the bridges in June and spent the past six months replacing them with new crossings that improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians and bicyclists crossing over I-94. The cost was $5.8 million.
