A late-night fight inside a bar spilled outside, and that's when a 28-year-old man was fatally shot over the weekend in St. Paul, the dead man's family said Monday.

Carlos Rogers, of Mounds View, was shot about 1:40 a.m. Sunday outside Born's Bar in the 800 block of Rice Street, his mother said.

Police have not announced any arrests in the killing.

Kamesha Coleman, Rogers' mother, said police gave her a brief rundown of what they believe are some of the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Coleman said her son "got into an actual fist fight" in the bar, and the other person "called someone" for help.

Those people arrived once the fight "escalated outside," Coleman said. That's when one of the people who were called shot Rogers, the mother said.

Police officers called to the scene immediately rendered aid and called for Fire Department medics, who arrived a short time later and pronounced Rogers dead.

Homicide investigators and officers canvassed the area that night and brought several witnesses to police headquarters for interviews. Police investigators say that anyone with information about the killing should call police at 651-266-5650.

Coleman said her son was living with her and her husband, looking for work and was "changing his ways, trying to make things better for his [10-year-old] daughter, who lives with her mother in Maplewood."

While Coleman, did not elaborate on what difficulties he dealt with earlier, Rogers has had a few scrapes with the law. His criminal history in Minnesota shows three convictions for drug possession as well as convictions for leaving the scene of a serious traffic crash, disorderly conduct and trespassing.

Funeral arrangements are pending. A fundraising page has been started to help the family with funeral expenses.
