In Focus: Contemporary Japanese Art
Stop for a moment before entering the "Kenneth Tam: Cold Open" exhibition on the third floor of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and you'll notice this mini-exhibition with works by Mori Chihiro, Ohtake Shinro and Morimura Yasumasa. Chihiro's "Picture of Money" (2016) critiques mainstream society's consumeristic focus, while Shinro uses collage to play with earthly forces. In Morimura's very performative "An Inner Dialogue with Frida Kahlo (Hand-Shaped Earring)" (2001), pictured, the artist transforms himself into a version of Frida, swapping out her brown shawl for a Louis Vuitton one. This is something of the artist's shtick — re-creating himself as famous figures from art history to create contemporary reflection on the historical.
