Ely area: The walleye and northern bite has been good, but a strong smallmouth bass bite has dominated anglers' attention on most area lakes the last two weeks. Anglers are regularly catching northerns measuring in the 40-inch range. Crappies are being found in 10 to 20 feet around the rock piles and other structures.
Grand Rapids area: Walleyes are being caught on area lakes. On the smaller bog-stained lakes, anglers are having success in depths of 5 to 8 feet in and around the weed beds. On deep, clear lakes walleyes are biting at the deeper structure. Anglers on Round, Bowstring and Little Winnibigoshish lakes are having success in the shallows.
Lake Mille Lacs: The walleye bite has remained good as anglers have found success in the mud flats and deep gravel with fish coming from depths of 22 to 32 feet. Among the most productive areas are Seguchie Flat, 7 Mile, the Boot and the 4 Mile gravel. The smallmouth bass bite has been sporadic but some are being found at the 8-15-foot rocks.
Lake Minnetonka: A bass tournament Monday showed how good the bass bite has been with anglers needing 30 pounds to finish in the money. Wayzata Bait and Tackle said the northern bite has been really good and the muskie fishing is starting to pick up. Crappies and sunfish are biting. Walleye action has been slow, except between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.
Walker area: The walleye bite on Leech Lake has been spotty, but some success is being found during early morning and evening feeding periods. A solid smallmouth and largemouth bass bite is being reported at the weed edges and transition areas on area lakes. Anglers on some area lakes are finding walleye at the weed lines and major bars and reefs.
White Bear Lake: Crappies and walleye fishing has been slow during daylight hours, but some anglers are having success at dusk or later in depths of 15 to 25 feet. Muskie action should improve as the water temp reaches seasonal highs. Bigger northerns have remained in colder waters, but smaller northerns have been aggressive throughout the lake.
