Minneapolis City Council candidate Mohamud Noor said Friday he's quitting the Sixth Ward DFL endorsing convention, which is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m.
Noor, who is challenging Council Member Abdi Warsame, cited a "potential safety risk for participants," and said, "We believe conducting the convention in hastily and nontransparent manner will cast a doubt on the credibility not only of the process but also the results."
The convention, however, will go forward as scheduled, said Dan McConnell, chair of the Minneapolis DFL. The event will be at Northeast Middle School, 2955 NE. Hayes St.
Warsame said he doesn't take Noor's statements seriously, and he's planning to bring his delegates to the convention.
"I'm very proud of the Ward Six residents and the thousands of people who showed up for the caucus, who persevered, and who are going to go to the convention tomorrow," Warsame said.
Noor and another challenger, Tiffini Flynn Forslund, have sought for weeks to have the convention canceled because they argue there were irregularities in the caucus, which was heavily attended and from which it appears Warsame came away with the most delegates.
Two potential locations for the event fell through before the DFL settled on Northeast Middle School, outside the ward, which covers Cedar-Riverside and parts of the Seward and Phillips neighborhoods.
In a meeting last week, a committee recommended the convention be canceled, but the Minneapolis DFL said it could not do that.
