On Saturday, private and charter schools around Minneapolis will band together for a school choice fair for students and families.

The event, which will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 301 NE. Main St., is an opportunity for families to see what 26 of the city's charter and private schools offer, according to Anne Marie Arndt, one of the event planners. Some St. Paul schools also will attend.

Presentations at the choice fair were open to any public or private school, a news release said. It's the first time a school choice event has been launched by Minneapolis charter schools and community groups.

David Núñez, who heads Southside Family Charter School and helped organize the event, said he felt a void when Minneapolis Public Schools stopped holding its school choice fair a couple of years ago.

"I personally felt like I missed the opportunity to connect with new families that didn't necessarily know very much about my school," Núñez said.

Organizers said that Minneapolis Public Schools was invited to participate but will not have a presence at the fair.
