Authorities on Sunday identified the man who was stabbed to death last week in the Dinkytown business district on the edge of the University of Minnesota campus.

Sean M. Maina, 21, of Maple Grove, suffered multiple stab wounds Thursday night and was found dead in a car along University Avenue SE. near 13th Avenue, according to the Hennepin County medical examiner's office.

Brandon Bockoven, 23, also of Maple Grove, told police he stabbed Maina twice after they argued about money, according to the criminal complaint filed Friday.

Maina was in the front seat of the car when emergency responders found him about 7:30 p.m. He died soon after at Hennepin County Medical Center.

When officers arrived, Bockoven was in the driver's seat, the charges said. When police asked where the suspect had gone, Bockoven told them that he was the one who had stabbed the victim. He handed a blue folding knife to police at the scene, according to the complaint.

Two others in the car told police that the men were arguing over money the victim owed to Bockoven for auto parts, according to the complaint. One witness told police she saw Bockoven stab the victim twice in the torso.

Bockoven remains in jail in lieu of $1 million bail, with a court appearance scheduled for Monday.
