A 23-year-old man was shot early Friday in north Minneapolis, and the victim died several hours later at a nearby hospital, authorities said.

Residents called police about gunshots shortly after 3 a.m., and officers responded to the 4300 block of Humboldt Avenue N., according to police.

Officers at the scene were told that the wounded man had been taken to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale. His identity has not been released, and police have yet to disclose a possible motive for the killing.

A car was stopped near the shooting scene, and three men in their 20s in the vehicle were held on suspicion of illegally possessing weapons, according to a police report. They remain jailed Friday afternoon.

"At this point, it's only the weapons charges" that the men are being accused of, police spokesman Scott Seroka said.

The police report includes six other victims — three men and three women — in connection with the shooting. Four were assaulted, and two suffered property damage, the report noted. Seroka said he did not have details on the circumstances surrounding what happened to the six, who range in age from 37 to 63.
