A woman eight months pregnant went into labor Friday after she was involved in a multicar crash during the morning rush hour on Interstate 94 in St. Paul, authorities said.

There was no roadside delivery for Shaquita Sandifer, 28, who was taken by ambulance to United Hospital in St. Paul. She was in the emergency department in satisfactory condition as of midmorning, the hospital said.

"As far as we know she is still one person," said Gloria O'Connell, a spokeswoman for Allina Health, which operates United.

Sandifer, of North St. Paul, was driving westbound on I-94 near Prior Avenue in the Midway area when hers was one of three vehicles that collided in the center and right lanes about 8:45 a.m. Police, a fire truck and paramedics arrived on the scene and found Sandifer going into labor.

"We sweat when those things happen," said Lt. Tiffani Nielson, a State Patrol spokeswoman.

Nielson said she did not know where Sandifer was driving when the crash occurred.

Traffic backed up to near Snelling Avenue until the scene was cleared about 9 a.m.
