An off-duty McLeod County sheriff's deputy confronted an "unruly patron" at a gas station in Norwood Young America and a struggle between the two led to a firearm being discharged early Friday, authorities said.
The deputy stopped for fuel at the Kwik Trip station on the 500 block of Reform Street "by chance" when a call about an unruly patron came in around 2:40 a.m., said Carver County Sheriff Jim Olson.
A struggle between the patron and the deputy ensued and a firearm was discharged, Olson said.
By the time Carver County deputies arrived, the suspect had fled the scene but was found a few blocks away. The man, described by witnesses to be in his 20s, was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center where he was treated for noncritical injuries and released to be interviewed by authorities.
The deputy was later taken to Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia with noncritical injuries, according to the sheriff's office. The identities of the deputy and suspect have not yet been released, pending interviews, Olson said.
Olson did not say who fired the gun. The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is leading the investigation, which the Carver County sheriff's office said is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings there.
Reform Street was closed between Highway 5 and Highway 212 until around 8:45 a.m., but the Kwik Trip remained taped off as investigators process physical evidence. A Kwik Trip employee reached by phone declined to comment.
