A 15-year-old boy has died after he crashed the car he was driving as he fled St. Paul police early Wednesday.

Police identified the boy as John McAfee of St. Paul.

About 12 a.m. Wednesday, police in the area of 4th and Robert Streets in the city's downtown came across a car that recently had been reported stolen. The officers tried to stop McAfee as he started to flee in the vehicle south on Robert Street.

While police chased the car with their lights and sirens on, McAfee continued to flee as he drove past other cars and went into oncoming lanes of traffic, police said. Officers eventually lost sight of the car as it continued south past Fillmore Avenue.

As an officer crossed the Robert Street overpass approaching Wood Street, he saw that McAfee had crashed. Medics were called to the scene and the teenager was taken to Regions Hospital, where he later died.

The officers involved in the incident have been placed on standard administrative leave.
