The Minnesota Department of Transportation wasl shut down in both directions of Hwy. 100 at 36th Street in St. Louis Park from 11 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday.

Southbound motorists were advised to exit at I-394, with Hwy. 169 as a decent alternate. Northbound motorists was advised to exit at the Crosstown. Again Hwy. 169 is a decent alternate.

All access to local roads and neighborhoods will be maintained, meaning southbound drivers will still be able to get off Hwy. 100 at Cedar Lake Road and Minnetonka Blvd./Hwy. 7. Northbound motorists will be able to access roads north of the Crosstown up to Excelsior Blvd.

MnDOT has been working on a pavement removal project on the W. 36th Street bridge for the past couple weeks. Last week, vibration from the equipment caused a piece of concrete to fall from the bridge. The chunk hit a vehicle passing under the bridge.

As a safety precaution, MnDOT has decided to close Hwy. 100 when working on the bridge.

"We are aware of the construction and traffic impacts on adjacent highways and we realize the short term closure on Hwy 100 may be an inconvenience," the agency said. "However we feel it is in the best interest of the public to work on the bridge when there isn't traffic underneath it."
