The crash occurred shortly before 5 p.m. Monday on two-lane Hwy. 48 in northern Pine County, according to the State Patrol.

Killed were the van's driver, Alva Rankin, 61, of Lake Nebagamon, Wis., and Jonathan Timblin, 20, of Rice Lake, Wis., who was driving the car, according to the patrol.

A passenger in the car, Alexandria Lund, 18, of Cameron, Wis., was taken to St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth with critical injuries.
