A fire tore through a home near Thursday afternoon near Duluth, leaving one man dead.

A neighbor called to report a house fire in the town of Solway, just west of Hermantown, around 2:45 p.m., said Lt. Jason Lukovsky of the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office.

The man killed was identified Friday afternoon as Damien Michael Rosen, 37, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office. Initial findings point to Rosen's dying from asphyxiation due to smoke and/or carbon monoxide, but an official cause of death hasn't been determined.

Authorities said Rosen had been staying at the residence for two or three weeks, and they believe he also has tied to San Bernardino, Calif.

The department reported "heavy flames visible through the roof" of the single-story house. "To this point, the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature," the Sheriff's Office said.

Firefighters from four agencies assisted the Solway Volunteer Fire Department, according to the Sheriff's Office.
