A collision at a rural intersection in southwestern Minnesota has left two people dead — a woman riding with her husband and a passenger in the other vehicle more than 1,200 miles from home, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 3:20 p.m. Sunday just north of Fulda at Hwy. 59 and County Road 3, the State Patrol said.

The patrol identified the victims killed as Kristen J. Boynton, 24, of Perry, Ga., and Kerry L. Schulz, 34, of Worthington, Minn.

The Worthington woman's husband, driver David L. Schulz, 38, was in critical condition at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale.

Two boys riding with the Schulzes, Jayden Vanvickle, 12, and Jared Vanvickle, 9, both of Worthington, were slightly hurt and hospitalized in nearby Sioux Falls, the patrol added.

The driver of the car from out of state, Charles Z. Goode, 24, of Lewisville, N.C., was taken to North Memorial with serious injuries.

Boynton's grandfather said Monday afternoon that she and Goode are a couple and were in southwestern Minnesota visiting her relatives.

"The were driving to look for a gift for their son," said grandfather Dennis Westgor, of Delavan, Wis. Boynton leaves behind two children, ages 3 and 5, he said. The kids were being watched by relatives and not on the shopping excursion, Westgor added.

According to the patrol:

The car driven by Goode was heading west on County Road 3 when it broadsided the Schulzes' SUV heading south on Hwy. 59.

A stop sign is posted for County Road 3 traffic, while drivers on Hwy. 59 have the right of way.

Everyone was wearing seat belts except the woman from Georgia.
