It was a cold Sunday afternoon in January when we left our downtown condo and walked through the skyway to the Max restaurant in Hotel Minneapolis, where our family joined us. The food was good and, enjoying being together, we lost track of the time. It was 6:10 when we left, and the skyways were locked. Because we'd come via skyway, we weren't wearing coats, but we were forced outside to the sidewalks in subzero weather.

I read much about leaders wanting to make downtown Minneapolis a destination, yet the skyway system operates mostly during weekday daytime hours. Find a meal there on weekends or evenings? Forget it. Try to get someplace using the skyways on weekend evenings? Forget it.
