The editorial telling gay rights advocates not to boycott the Basilica Block Party has one major flaw ("Build voter support in gay marriage fight," June 29). It implies that there's no way to support the needy or worthy causes without supporting the Basilica's event.

In fact, there are hundreds of organizations that aren't bigoted serving people in need. The point of the Block Party boycott effort was to draw attention to the Catholic Church's opposition to same-sex couples who wish to marry.

Historically, the church has supported a number of hideous measures that singled out particular populations. In that vein, it has become a major advocate for an amendment to the state Constitution that would further discrimination against same-sex couples.

We all should research the organizations we support and make sure they are inclusive in supporting human rights for all and not just those approved by the Catholic Church.
