A 24-year-old Le Sueur man was sentenced Friday to 32 years in prison for fatally stabbing his friend's grandfather in the elderly man's Eden Prairie home, according to the Hennepin County attorney's office.

Nathan Foth pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in May. He was sentenced to 391 months in prison — the highest sentence under state guidelines.

According to the attorney's office, Foth broke into the home of 74-year-old Allen Retzer in July 2016 and hid in the basement for two days before killing Retzer.

Hennepin County District Judge Jeannice Reding said that "Retzer was asleep in his bed and vulnerable at the time of the killing and that Foth did not render aid to the victim and waited in the room to make sure he died," the attorney's office said.

During Friday's sentencing hearing, four family members gave impact statements.
