A 73-year-old Lake Elmo man gravely injured after being struck by a pickup truck while bicycling in Hugo this month has died.

David Noennig, a retired principal of Wildwood Elementary School in Mahtomedi, died from a severe brain injury Friday at Regions Hospital — 10 days after colliding with a vehicle near the intersection of 170th Street and Jeffrey Avenue N.

Emergency responders found Noennig unresponsive on July 3 and airlifted him to Regions, where he remained in a coma for more than a week with a serious head injury, broken left shoulder and fractured pelvis, according to his CaringBridge page.

Noennig, a marathon runner and skier, "joined the Twin City Bike Club and rode thousands of miles every season, rain or shine (ask his wife)," according to his Star Tribune obituary. "He died suddenly doing what he loved, which provides peace for his family."

He earned his doctorate at the University of Minnesota and spent many years as a cellist with the St. Paul Civic Symphony.
