U.S.-to-Cuba flight lands
The first commercial flight between the United States and Cuba since 1961 landed in Santa Clara, Cuba, on Wednesday. Cheers broke out in the cabin of JetBlue Flight 387 as the plane touched down. The flight originated in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The arrival opens a new era of U.S.-Cuba travel with about 300 flights a week connecting the U.S. with the island nation. The U.S. Department of Transportation also announced the airlines selected to operate routes to Havana: Alaska, American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit and United.

Delta battles lost luggage
Delta Air Lines is investing $50 million to soothe one of air travel's biggest headaches: lost and delayed luggage. Delta already has one of the industry's best luggage handling records — just one out of every 500 bags failed to arrive on time — but hopes that by deploying a radio-frequency identification (RFID) tracking system globally it can improve further. The RFID system wirelessly identifies tags attached to items. If it works, other airlines are likely to follow. Ultimately, the bag tag might be replaced with permanent RFID readers in our suitcases, reducing the chances fliers will start a vacation missing their swimsuit.

Chekhov on Broadway
What's new on Broadway this fall? Cate Blanchett will make her Broadway debut in Anton Chekhov's first — and long-forgotten — play. The Oscar winner will star opposite Richard Roxburgh in "The Present," which centers on a woman celebrating her 40th birthday at her country summer home (previews begin Dec. 17 at the Barrymore Theatre; telecharge.com). Meanwhile, Diane Lane returns to Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard," in which she made her own Broadway debut in 1977 at age 12.
