Itasca hike
Itasca State Park, 12:30-3 p.m. Saturday
This 2-mile hike can be challenging but is worth the effort. Pass old pines, maple stands and the shores of Myrtle Lake. Meet at the visitor center at 12:30 p.m., and then carpool to the trailhead. The route will follow the Red Pine, Crossover and Ozawindib trails. (1-218-699-7251, mndnr.gov)
Run in a park
Wild River State Park, 8:30 a.m. Saturday
Take on a 5-kilometer run or walk. Race-day registration ($35 with T-shirt, $25 without) is available from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. The race starts at 10 a.m. Proceeds support the park. (651-583-2125 ext. 227, mndnr.gov)
Geocache basics
William O'Brien State Park,10:30 a.m.-noon Saturday
Learn how to use a global positioning system unit to find hidden treasures at state parks and trails. A limited number of GPS units are available. Call the park office at 651-433-0500 to register. After the program, earn a special 2017 wildflower card that is part of the geocache pursuit. (mndnr.gov)
Bike at Glendalough
Glendalough State Park, 1-3 p.m. Sunday

Banding owls

Bird trek
Rapids Lake Education and Visitor Center, 8-10:30 a.m. Saturday
Join a bird walk in the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge unit near Carver. During the fall migration, observe a mix of waterfowl, raptors, warblers and sparrows, all stopping to rest and feed before they continue their southerly migration. Birders of all skill levels are welcome. Bring along your binoculars and favorite field guide, and dress for the weather. The Rapids Lake Education and Visitor Center is at 15865 Rapids Lake Road.
