Authorities said Tuesday they are still trying to identify and find the driver who crashed an SUV on a freeway in Minneapolis and fled, leaving one passenger dead and another critically injured.

The rollover occurred about 2:15 p.m. Sunday on an Interstate 94 ramp near N. 4th Street, according to the State Patrol.

"We do not know who was the driver yet," said Patrol Lt. Tiffani Nielson.

State records show the vehicle's owner lives in south Minneapolis.

Kimel M. Sykes, 57, of Minneapolis, died at the scene after being thrown from the SUV, the patrol said. Sykes was not wearing a seat belt.

David J. Bryant, 37, of Minneapolis, was taken to HCMC with life-threatening injuries, the patrol added. He was upgraded to serious condition, a hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday afternoon.

The SUV was heading toward downtown when it "veered off of the roadway to the right for an unknown reason," the patrol statement read.
