Sue Hunter, owner of Home for a Change interior design in Minnetonka, offered these tips:

Peel-and-stick murals and decals create inexpensive "artwork" and enhance drab surfaces. Hunter made beige kitchen cabinets pop using black fleur-de-lis decals.

Side-panel draperies dress up uninteresting windows.

Plug-in chandeliers add light and touch of romance.

Large mirrors help small spaces feel brighter and more spacious. (Find large framed ones at Home Goods.)

New hardware on dated cabinets gives them a refreshed look.

Area rugs camouflage dull or unsightly flooring or carpet.

Floating shelves add clean-lined character to a generic room.

New towels and sheets make even a small apartment feel more luxurious.

Candles (battery-operated) and live plants add warmth and ambience.
