A person badly injured in a house fire Wednesday in Maplewood died Thursday morning, authorities said.

The Maplewood Fire Department was called to the house in the 1800 block of Kennard Street at 2:50 p.m. Wednesday. When emergency responders arrived, they found a neighbor trying to move the victim from the home, authorities said.

Police and fire helped remove the person, and paramedics began treatment.

The victim was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul in critical condition with burns and smoke inhalation.

At 9:30 a.m. Thursday, the Fire Department was informed the patient had died. The medical examiner's office has not yet determined a cause of death.

"On behalf of the department, we offer our condolences to the victim's family and friends," said Maplewood Fire Chief Steve Lukin.

Authorities said the fire was contained in the kitchen and family room, but there was heavy smoke damage throughout the building.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
