Details: Allina Health launched the first phase of a long-range facilities strategy with an expansion of Mercy Hospital's operating rooms and new parking ramp in Coon Rapids.

With the project, the health care provider is kicking off its "One Hospital, Two Campuses" long-range plan, under which it is merging the operations and identities of Mercy Hospital and Unity Hospital in Fridley. Beginning in 2017, the two hospitals will operate as one and share the single name Mercy Hospital. The Fridley location will be known as Mercy Hospital — Unity Campus.

As part of the 20- to 30-year strategic effort, Allina says it is making significant facilities upgrades to strengthen health care services for its patient base in the north metro.

That includes this summer's developments in Coon Rapids, where a two-story building addition expanding the hospital's surgery space is underway. The new construction will be on the south side of the hospital, with an exterior materials mix chosen to match that of Mercy's recently built Mother Baby Center.

The other main feature of the current expansion is a 329-space, three-level parking deck. The first level will feature precast concrete panels with a series of open ribbon windows, while the upper levels will sport a perforated architectural metal skin on its exterior.
