Details: A new eight-story apartment building near Lake Calhoun is officially a "go" after receiving Minneapolis Planning Commission approval following a year of meetings and discussions with neighbors.
Denver-based Brickstone Partners will demolish an office building constructed in 1953 at 3100 W. Lake St. and then build a 200-unit, market-rate apartment complex.
The final plans differ significantly from those presented last year that called for a 13-story building. That proposal was scaled back after many meetings with the Cedar-Isles-Dean Neighborhood Association, which advocated for shorter heights and sought to minimize the impact of the project on the neighboring Loop Calhoun Condominiums.
The condo residents were seeking a legally binding guarantee from Brickstone that would protect them should the construction process damage their property. The developer instead offered a nonbinding pledge to address their concerns.
Despite the unresolved issue, the planning commission voted 5-1 to approve the project, which Brickstone said will produce a "transit-oriented redevelopment" tapping the Midtown Greenway and the future West Lake Street Station of the Southwest Light Rail Transit, which would be located about three blocks to the west.
