One of the finest films ever made (just ask Quentin Tarantino), "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" gets a well-deserved makeover in a 50th-anniversary Blu-ray coming Tuesday from Kino.
Sergio Leone's influential western — released in the United States in 1967 — stars Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach as the titular trio racing to find hidden cash during the Civil War. The film remains vital today thanks to its highly stylized cinematography, unflinching violence and unforgettable score by Ennio Morricone.
The two-disc set offers a restored high-def version of the theatrical cut that looks less yellowish than some previous home-video releases, the infamously extended cut of the film, new commentary by film historian Tim Lucas, and oodles of previously released extras. The best of the latter includes commentary by Leone biographer Christopher Frayling and an examination of Morricone's iconic music by score expert Jon Burlingame.
