2018 recruiting By the numbers

A breakdown of P.J. Fleck's recruitment of the Class of 2018:

134

Scholarship offers that Fleck and the Gophers already have made to current high school juniors in the Class of 2018. This far outpaces former Gophers coaches Jerry Kill and Tracy Claeys, according to recruiting observers.

1

Verbal commitments to the Gophers from the '18 class: Benny Sapp III, a defensive back who moved to Eden Prairie last year and plans to play his first season with the Eagles this fall. Of the 14 Big Ten schools, 13 have one, two or three commitments at this point (Penn State is the outlier with 11).

0

Offers to players who played for a Minnesota high school team last fall. Sapp is the lone in-state offer, but he has been injured the past two seasons. Recruiting analysts expect the 2018 class across Minnesota to be down, with few Division I-caliber targets for Fleck and other big-school coaches.

48

Offers to players who rank as four-star prospects, according to 247sports.com's composite star ranking that combines several recruiting grades.

1

Offers to five-star players: BJ Foster of Angleton, Texas, a 6-1 safety ranked as the 11th-best high school player in the country. Foster has 22 offers and is predicted to sign with Texas.

22

Offers to wide receivers, the most popular position targeted by Fleck so far. Others high on his list: defensive ends (16), cornerbacks (15), linebackers (12) and all-purpose athletes (12).
