Republican control of the state House and Senate has made significant gun control measures unlikely at the Minnesota Capitol this year. But lawmakers have introduced a handful of measures:
• A bipartisan group of state senators proposed universal background checks for gun sales and transfers.
• The same group of senators also introduced a measure that would make it mandatory to report lost or stolen firearms.
• A pair of DFL lawmakers authored a bill to raise the minimum age to purchase a semiautomatic assault weapon from 18 to 21.
• A DFL state representative proposed allowing police or family members to ask the court for a gun violence protective order to temporarily prohibit someone from possessing a firearm.
• Another DFL representative has a bill that would restrict the Minnesota sale of bump stocks, a device that can increase the rate of fire when attached to a semi-automatic weapon.
