Prosecutors in Grand Rapids, Minn., will seek to have a 15-year-old charged as an adult in the fatal stabbing this week on an elementary school playground.

The boy is being held on charges of second-degree murder and sale of a controlled substance in a school zone after an incident Tuesday night at Murphy Elementary School.

Itasca County Attorney Matti Adam has filed a certification request to have the case moved to adult court, her office said in a statement issued Thursday. A hearing on the certification request has been set for May 14.

According to a statement released by Grand Rapids police, officers responded at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a stabbing at the school. When they arrived, they found a 15-year-old Grand Rapids boy standing on the playground holding a knife. On the ground next to him was a 20-year-old woman, unconscious with a stab wound in her abdomen. Authorities later identified her as Cheré A. Morgan of Grand Rapids.

Officers tried to resuscitate Morgan and she was brought to Grand Itasca Hospital, where she died.

Grand Rapids Police Chief Scott Johnson said drugs were found at the scene, and police believe the incident isn't related to the school.

"We believe this meeting was arranged by these two people," he said. "The public is not in danger."
