The No. 4 Gophers women's hockey team tied Ohio State 5-5 on Saturday afternoon at Ridder Arena — and the Gophers were fortunate to get the draw.
The Buckeyes (3-0-1, 1-0-1) outshot the home team 9-0 in the five-minute scoreless overtime. OSU, which won the ensuing shootout 2-0 for an extra point in the WCHA standings, won the series opener 4-3 to end a 44-game winless streak against Minnesota.
"It was an exciting hockey game, that's for sure, kind of fire-wagon hockey out there," Gophers coach Brad Frost said. "… We did a lot of good things."
The Gophers (1-2, 0-1) took a 2-0 lead in the first eight minutes as Olivia Knowles, on a power play, and Caitlin Reilly scored. After OSU tied it, Sophie Skarzynski made it 3-2 Gophers with 3:52 left in the opening period. Alex Woken restored Minnesota's two-goal lead with a goal at 23 seconds of the second, but the Buckeyes scored twice before the period ended, and Dani Sadek of Lakeville North gave OSU a 5-4 lead on a power play at 12:48 of the third.
Reilly's second goal, 54 seconds later, tied it again.
