A woman in her 70s shot and killed a woman in her Northfield home Sunday morning. Police arrested the woman but later released her, according to Northfield police.

The gunfire occurred about 7:50 a.m. at a home in the 1200 block of Jefferson Road, police said.

"Initial information was that the shooting was related to an intruder in the home ... but that turned out not to be true," Police Chief Monte Nelson said less than three hours after the shooting. "There is no danger to the public."

Authorities have yet to disclose the identities of either woman, nor have they addressed a possible motive for the killing. No one else was in the home at the time, the chief said.

The victim was a woman in her 60s, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators from the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension were on the scene Sunday night, executing a search warrant and processing evidence.

According to police scanner traffic captured by mnpoliceclips.com, one of the first officers to arrive directed dispatch to "tell her to come outside, hands up, nothing in her hand."

Dispatch responded, "She's telling us that she cannot step over the dead body [in the bedroom doorway]. That's where the body is at. She's inside the bedroom."

The woman went on to say that she placed her weapon on the bed and was awaiting police to arrive.

She was arrested and escorted to a hospital for evaluation, the scanner traffic continued.

Neighbor Paul Bernhard told the Northfield News that he saw the woman being brought out of the home in handcuffs.
