A motorist rammed a vehicle into a traffic signal post in the middle of the night in northeast Minneapolis and ran from the scene, where his passenger died moments later, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 3:50 a.m. Sunday near the southwest edge of Hillside Cemetery at the intersection of Stinson Boulevard NE. and Ridgway Parkway, police said.

Officers arrived to find a woman trapped in the vehicle, police added.

"Female is not breathing, [and] we're not getting a pulse, either," an officer at the scene was heard telling emergency dispatch audio.

Officers got her out of the vehicle and provided medical attention until paramedics arrived. However, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released the passenger's identity.

A witness told police that a male who was driving the vehicle ran before officers showed up. Police searched the area, but the suspect remains at large.

An officer said a man's identification was found near the woman, and it led police to a home in the 2900 block of Randolph Street NE., the dispatch audio said. Police learned that the man had left that address intoxicated and with his girlfriend.

Video surveillance from a building operated by Honeywell near the location of the crash captured images of the suspect, the dispatch communication indicated.
