Lebanese mourning

"Leila's Death" weaves Arabic funerary traditions with contemporary dance, music and storytelling. Created by Lebanese theater artist and choreographer Ali Chahrour, the piece incorporates the reflections of a professional mourner named Leila, paid to sing at funerals and burials throughout southern Lebanon. A hit at France's 2016 Festival d'Avignon, "Leila's Death" pairs ancient ritual with modern music (featuring a trio from Beirut) for a fresh investigation of death and mourning.
