A construction worker was seriously hurt Wednesday when he was struck by a Bobcat front-end loader in St. Paul.

Chester C. Mcswain, 30, of Minneapolis, suffered "significant" injuries to both legs when he was run over about 3:24 p.m. at a construction site for Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, according to a police report.

The church's senior pastor, Steve Daniels, said he witnessed the accident, which occurred in the church's driveway during work on a 10,000-square-foot addition to the church at 501 Lawson Av. W.

"It happened so fast," he said.

Mcswain was using either a shovel or broom to clean sand off the church's driveway when the Bobcat backed into him, Daniels said. The sand had been used for the construction.

"It was just an accident," Daniels said.

The driver and victim worked for a subcontractor, he said, adding that Langer Construction was the main contractor.

The Bobcat maneuvered off Mcswain, who remained conscious as police and medics arrived to tend to him. The Bobcat driver was distraught, Daniels said. "His heart was broken," Daniels said.
