Showcasing more than 20 films from across the Hispanic world, with a special focus on Mexico, this four-day fest kicks off Thursday with an impressive childhood drama from Catalan Spain, "Summer 1993." It follows the rural upbringing of a 6-year-old Barcelona orphan, Frida, who finds that life with an unfamiliar uncle and aunt can make even tying your shoes a temper-flaring issue. Pictured above, the remarkable young star Laia Artigas and Paula Robles, who plays her cousin, deliver every silly and heartbreaking scene with lived-in authenticity. Director Carla Simón will attend the screening. Others scheduled to appear next weekend include Mitzi Vanessa Arreola and Amir Galván Cervera, directors of the crime drama "The 4th Company"; Andres Crespo, writer and star of "Such Is Life in the Tropics"; Lucia Gaja, director of "Intimate Battles," an intense domestic-violence documentary; Sofia Carrillo, presenting three incredible animated shorts, and Miguel Angel Rosales, who directed the Afro-Andalusian musical documentary "Gurumbe."
