An Illinois man was charged with fatally shooting a St. Paul man outside the Lamplighter Lounge in September.
Peter D. Crosby, 35, was charged Friday in Ramsey County District Court with one count of second-degree murder with intent in the death of Jauan E. Love on Sept. 29.
According to the complaint: Love, 37, was at the Lamplighter Lounge with his brothers. Crosby and two companions were also at the lounge, which serves alcohol and features strippers.
Surveillance video showed no issues between the two groups that night, nor between Love and anyone else. Surveillance video also captured what occurred outside.
Both groups "milled around" in the parking lot when the lounge closed at 2 a.m. Crosby's group spoke to a man sitting in the driver's seat of a car parked in the lot. Crosby returned to the car he arrived in, and after a short amount of time he returned to the other man's car.
Love also walked up to the same man's car at one point and the two talked. There was no physical altercation between Love and the man.
For reasons not explained in the criminal complaint, Crosby allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Love in the head from behind, the complaint said.
The man in the car drove off, and Crosby's two companions fled on foot. Crosby left in the car he had arrived in.
The Ramsey County medical examiner's office found that Love was shot once in the left side of his head. A second bullet entered the back of his right shoulder and entered his head.
One of Crosby's friends refused to identify him, and the other refused to speak to police. Phone records tracked Crosby between Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin and back to Zion, Ill., where he has connections. He is now in custody in Illinois awaiting extradition to Minnesota.
