A man with a long criminal history has been charged with the sexual assault of a woman outside a downtown Minneapolis bar that was recorded by a police surveillance camera.
Richard J. Hogan, 28, was charged Friday in Hennepin County District Court with first- and second-degree criminal sexual conduct in connection with the assault on Sept. 7 outside Maruso, a bar in the 700 block of Hennepin Avenue S.
Hogan, whose address is unknown, has an extensive criminal history, including a conviction in 2014 for terroristic threats related to a sexual assault allegation and for another sex crime in 2004 in Missouri. He's now in the Olmsted County jail for violating terms of his registration as a predatory sex offender.
A second suspect in the attack, who is believed to be homeless, has not been located, the charges against Hogan read.
Bar owner Crissy Kabanuk said Monday that one of two women who were out together worked for her at the time, and "they were out and partied ... and were allowed to stay until a ride came."
According to the criminal complaint:
A 23-year-old woman told police that a Maruso bartender allowed her and a friend to remain in the bar after closing hours. She left about 6 a.m., sat in a chair in front of the bar and called her mother for a ride home.
Two men approached her, uncovered her breasts and molested her. The man with Hogan then assaulted her with his hand. Both tried but failed to force her to perform oral sex.
A passerby told the men to leave the woman alone, prompting them to walk away.
Video from the police camera showed the men "standing over the [woman] for an extended period of time and groping her," the complaint read.
DNA collected while the woman was at the hospital was analyzed, and it matched Hogan's, the complaint said.
Under questioning by police on April 12 in the Olmsted County jail, Hogan denied attacking the woman and had no explanation for why his DNA was found on her.
