WEALTHY WOLF WIGGINS

Andrew Wiggins signed a five-year deal with the Wolves that will keep him under contract through 2023.

Max meaning: The contract, which starts in 2018-19, is worth the NBA maximum, which projects to $148 million, but the exact amount won't be known until the salary cap is set next summer. In Wiggins' case, the contract is worth 25 percent of the salary cap. Signing with the Wolves gives Wiggins a valuable fifth year in the deal; the longest contract a free agent can get from a team other than his current one is a four-year deal.

Playing up: Wiggins, 22, was the first overall selection in the 2014 draft by Cleveland, which traded him to the Wolves in the Kevin Love deal. In three seasons, Wiggins has played 245 of a possible 246 games, averaging 20.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. He was the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2014-15. Last season, he averaged 23.6 points and had five 40-plus games.

The old deal: Wiggins' rookie contract expires after this season. It was worth $24.85 million, including $7,574,323 this season.

The new deal: Base salaries, pending next year's salary cap, project to $25.3 million in 2018-19, $27.3 million in 2019-20, $29.3 million in 2020-21, $31.3 million in 2021-22, and $33.3 million in 2022-23.

Next up: Teams can give two of their players max deals, so center Karl-Anthony Towns is eligible to get his big payday next summer.
