An Anoka County jury has convicted a 28-year-old man in connection with a drunken-driving crash that killed a man who was picking up his mail, the county attorney's office announced Thursday.
Adam J. Rodman of Blaine was driving up to 70 miles per hour in a 30-mph zone last May when he fatally struck Danilo Aguilar, 39, who was standing at his mailbox, the office said.
Rodman was charged in May 2016 with three felony counts of criminal vehicular homicide and one misdemeanor count of failing to stop for a collision.
Deliberations began Wednesday afternoon and the jury returned guilty verdicts on all four counts Thursday morning, the attorney's office said.
"While this conviction won't bring the victim back, our hope is that it brings a sense of justice to the victim's family," said Anoka County Attorney Tony Palumbo in a statement. "We felt strongly the defendant should be held accountable for this tragic and preventable act of recklessness."
Rodman had struck another car before hitting Aguilar as he stood on the sidewalk by his mailbox, throwing him more than 100 feet, the criminal complaint said.
Rodman fled the scene, according to the complaint, and was found at his nearby home by police who followed a trail of oil and debris.
An affidavit by a detective said Rodman was found in his bedroom. "Mr. Rodman smelled strongly of alcohol and appeared to be heavily intoxicated," the complaint said.
Rodman is scheduled for sentencing on June 2.
