Authorities on Monday identified the resident who was killed late last week in a house fire in northeast Minneapolis.

Thomas E. Nowak, 63, died Friday night from injuries suffered in the fire in his home in the 1100 block of 23rd Avenue NE., according to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office.

The fire, which was contained on the first floor, was extinguished within about 20 minutes. Firefighters found Nowak while searching the second floor.

He was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center and died there.

Assistant Fire Chief Bryan Tyner said it appears that Nowak suffered from smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
