Breezy, then lethal, then back again, the caustic satire “American Made” is one of the more enjoyable movies of the year.
Tom Cruise is in top form in this real-life story of a talented pilot who was ambitious, amoral and none too smart — just the sort of useful idiot who’d get recruited for secret flights below the border.
Cruise has always been more interesting as a morally compromised antihero than a simple good guy. He makes this uniquely unsympathetic character not evil, just human.
