Four people have now been charged, and a fifth person may also be at large, in connection with a plot that left a Minneapolis real estate agent shot to death in a north Minneapolis alley on New Year's Eve and the father of their two little girls seriously wounded by gunfire earlier that day.
Shante C. Davis, 38, of Minneapolis, was charged Thursday in Hennepin County District Court as being an accomplice after the fact in the killing of 28-year-old Monique Baugh, who was tricked into thinking she was meeting someone at a Maple Grove home for sale but was instead kidnapped, driven in a rental truck and shot in the alley.
Less than an hour earlier, her live-in boyfriend and father of their 1- and 3-year-old daughters survived being shot at their north Minneapolis home as part of the same alleged scheme carried out by the same men.
Charged with murder and kidnapping are Cedric L. Berry, 41, of Minneapolis and brother-in-law Berry A. Davis, 40, of Brooklyn Park. Elsa Segura, 28, of Fridley, is charged with kidnapping on suspicion that she made the call that lured Baugh to her death.
Police say that Shante Davis, the wife of Cedric Berry and Berry Davis' sister, is the person who bought a cellphone five days before it was used by Segura to lure Baugh with a phone call to the Maple Grove home being sold.
Shante Davis also was with Cedric Berry and Berry Davis at the location where the rental truck was picked up, according to cellphone records and video surveillance cited in the charges against her, and also was with them a few hours after the shootings.
Shante Davis, Berry and Segura remain jailed. Berry Davis is believed to have fled the state, Thursday's allegations against Shante Davis revealed.
No charges filed so far specify a motive, but one criminal complaint said the bloodshed occurred after Baugh's partner, rising rapper Jon Mitchell-Momoh, had just signed a contract and was "flaunting his cash on social media."
Court documents point to at least one more person possibly being involved in the shootings. Court documents identify him as a close friend of Berry Davis. Also, Mitchell-Momoh told police he's someone who "wanted to harm him," the charges against her read.
