See more of the story

THE Traveler: Tom Campbell of Fridley.

The scene: A new breed of beach bum appeared on a shore of the Otago Peninsula, near the city of Dunedin on the South Island of New Zealand. "This group of sheep came onto the beach and seemed to welcome this pair of penguins as they returned to their nests," Campbell wrote in an e-mail.

The trip: Campbell and his wife, Barb, took a three-week road trip through New Zealand in November 2016 to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. The two were on a wildlife tour to view sea lions, fur seals and yellow-eyed penguins — all residents of the Otago Peninsula. The rare New Zealand sea lions are found only on New Zealand's southern islands. The same is true of the yellow-eyed penguin, two of which are shown in this photo. The bird's name refers to the distinctive band of yellow feathers that arcs from the back of the head to the eyes. "We had certainly seen many sheep in pastures during the trip, however, it was amusing to see this group on the beach," Campbell wrote.

Equipment: The photographer used a Nikon D3300 camera with a Tamron 16-300mm lens to capture this serendipitous moment.
