The scene: During a morning ride, camels and their passengers cast shadows in the Sahara Desert outside Merzouga, Morocco, a small village near the border with Algeria.
The Trip: A group of 16 travelers, including 13 from the Twin Cities, traveled to Morocco with Overseas Adventure Travel (oattravel.com), a Boston-based tour operator. "Sleeping in the desert was extremely hot (127 degrees in the tents), but the stark beauty, stargazing and solitude made it all unforgettable," Homme wrote in an e-mail.
the Destination: "Morocco is a fascinating place to visit: beautiful coastline and beaches, the High Atlas mountains and, of course, the Sahara," Homme wrote.
how he got the shot: Homme shot this photo from the back of a camel, "hanging onto the saddle with one hand, with the camera outstretched in the other." He used a Nikon Coolpix with a 30X lens, and says a larger camera would have made the shot impossible. "I was pinching myself during this ride that all the ingredients for capturing the moment just fell into place," he wrote.
